ARCHIE'S HAUS | DIY & DECORATING | HALLOWEEN

An easy, budget-friendly Halloween craft that's equal parts spooky, charming, and surprisingly chic.

There's something about decorating for fall that makes us want to slow down, get creative, and make our home feel extra cozy. And while we love a good antique store find or a beautifully styled seasonal display, sometimes the best decorations are the ones you make yourself.

Enter: DIY clay ghosts.

These adorable little spirits are the perfect addition to a bookshelf, entryway table, coffee table, or Halloween dinner party centerpiece. They're simple to make, easy to personalize, and have that charming, handmade look we absolutely love here at Archie's Haus.

The best part? You don't need a pottery wheel, a kiln, or any artistic experience. Just a little air-dry clay, a few household supplies, and some creativity.

What You'll Need

Most of these supplies can be found at your local craft store, and you may already have a few tucked away in a drawer.

  • White air-dry modeling clay

  • Rolling pin or smooth glass bottle

  • Aluminum foil, small cups, or rounded objects for shaping

  • Parchment paper or a silicone craft mat

  • Straw, toothpick, or clay sculpting tool

  • Small bowl of water

  • Fine-grit sandpaper (optional)

  • Acrylic paint and a small paintbrush (optional)

  • Matte acrylic sealer suitable for air-dry clay (optional)

Budget tip: You don't need expensive sculpting tools. A butter knife, drinking straw, and the end of a paintbrush can do most of the work.

Let's Make Some Ghosts!

Step 1: Roll Out Your Clay

Knead your clay until it's smooth and workable. Roll it into an even sheet about ¼ inch thick. Keeping the thickness consistent helps prevent cracking and uneven drying.

Step 2: Give Your Ghost Its Shape

Create a rounded support using aluminum foil or an upside-down small cup covered with plastic wrap. Gently drape your clay over the form, allowing the edges to fold naturally like flowing fabric. Avoid stretching the clay too thin.

Step 3: Add a Little Personality

Use a straw or sculpting tool to create two eyes. Add a small open mouth for a surprised ghost, or leave it with simple eyes for a minimalist look. Smooth the openings and any rough edges with a slightly damp fingertip.

Step 4: Let Your Ghost Dry

Allow your ghost to dry according to the clay manufacturer's instructions, often 24–72 hours or longer for thicker pieces. Once the shape is firm enough to hold itself, carefully remove the support so the inside can dry thoroughly.

Step 5: Add the Finishing Touches

Once completely dry, gently sand any rough spots. Keep your ghost naturally white for a soft, organic finish, or add subtle details with acrylic paint. A compatible matte sealer can help protect the finished surface.

Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Little Ghost

Here are a few things worth knowing before getting your hands covered in clay.

1. Don't roll your clay too thin.

Aim for approximately ¼ inch thickness. Thin edges are more likely to crack or break, especially when you're moving your ghost around.

2. A little water goes a long way.

Use slightly damp fingers to smooth imperfections. Too much water can weaken the clay and increase the likelihood of cracking as it dries.

3. Don't force perfection.

A slightly crooked ghost? Adorable. Uneven folds? Even better. The charm of handmade decorations is that no two pieces look exactly alike.

4. Be patient with drying.

Resist the temptation to speed things up with a hair dryer or oven. Air-dry clay needs time, and drying too quickly can cause cracking.

5. Make a whole ghost family.

Create a few different sizes instead of just one. Groupings of three or five look especially lovely when decorating shelves and tables.

6. Choose the right clay.

Look specifically for air-dry clay, not traditional non-hardening modeling clay. And remember that polymer clay has different curing requirements.

How to Style Your Handmade Ghosts

The fun doesn't stop once your ghosts have dried. Now comes our favorite part: finding the perfect little spot for them around the haus.

The Collected Bookshelf

Pair your ghosts with vintage books, brass candlesticks, and a few dried branches.

The Halloween Tablescape

Nestle a few ghosts between miniature pumpkins, linen napkins, and warm LED candlelight.

The Cozy Coffee Table

Arrange a few ghosts on a wooden tray with a small pumpkin and your favorite fall coffee-table book.

The Welcoming Entryway

Give guests a friendly little fright with a ghost family beside an antique mirror or vase of fall branches.

A little safety reminder: Air-dry clay decorations are not designed to hold burning candles or sit near an open flame. If you want your ghosts to glow, use battery-operated LED tea lights instead.

Make It a Ghost-Making Night

Why not turn this simple project into an evening with friends?

Put on your favorite Halloween playlist, make a pot of soup, pour something cozy, and set up a little ghost-making station around the dining table.

Have everyone create their own ghost with a different expression or personality. You'll end up with a collection of handmade decorations and a few good memories along the way.

And if you're anything like us, you'll probably have a curious Bernese Mountain Dog supervising the entire operation. Just be sure to keep the clay and tools out of your pup's reach.

A Little Handmade Magic

At Archie's Haus, we believe a beautiful home doesn't have to be filled with expensive things. Sometimes, all it takes is a little imagination, a few simple supplies, and the willingness to make something yourself.

These sweet little ghosts are proof that seasonal decorating can be affordable, creative, and still feel thoughtfully curated.

So grab some clay, embrace the imperfections, and give your home a little handmade Halloween charm.

Come in. Stay awhile. And don't be afraid of a little boo.

With love, Keegan, Kyle & Archie 🐾
